How I Learned What Really Works in Winter
It’s been an interesting winter season… to say the least. Mountains of snow in places that rarely get any, and no snow in places like… THE MOUNTAINS.
Regardless of what winter brings, I’ve got an arsenal of gear that keeps me warm, comfy, and cozy.
Before we go any further- here are my cold-weather credentials. Growing up in Colorado, I’m no stranger to bitterly cold temperatures and whiteout snowstorms. But where I gained the most experience with Mr. Frost was during my time as a meteorologist in Washington, DC.
During snowstorms, I was always sent out into the elements to report on weather conditions. This meant spending hours outside in the freezing, bone-chilling, freeze-your-snot-with-one-breath cold- with very few resources to keep me warm and comfortable.
I’ve learned the hard way so hopefully you don’t have to.
Plus, I absolutely loathe how bulky some winter gear can be, and I’ve found you some great options to avoid that. And if I can be totally honest… a few of these things have been GAME CHANGERS.

Outdoor Essentials to Stay Warm and Cute Without Bulky Layers
Would you believe me if I told you that you don’t have to sacrifice style for warmth during your outdoor winter escapades?
With just a few simple- but effective- pieces, you can stay warm, cozy, and chic.
The key is LAYERS.
Best Base Layers for Extreme Cold Weather
If you know you’re going to be out in the elements for a while, it’s essential that your base layer keeps you warm and cozy.
The layer closest to your skin is your first line of defense for trapping body heat. If you aren’t spending long periods of time outside, you can skip this section.
Fleece-lined long johns are my go-to base layer. They’re comfortable and warm without being overstimulating or sticky.
I first bought this pair for a trip to Iceland… in January. Winter is supposed to be the best time of year to see the Northern Lights, so my bestie and I braved the cold to see them- and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
It took about six hours of driving around the Icelandic countryside at night to find a break in the clouds. Just after midnight, on a pitch-black beach with nothing but the sound of angry waves and violent winds, the sky turned celestial- pillars of blue and green glistening like cosmic stained glass.
It was truly life-changing… and definitely freezing cold.
Lightweight Winter Jackets That Are Actually Warm
Your top layer is just as important as your base layer. The base layer keeps heat in, while the top layer keeps the cold out.
I’ve narrowed it down to three basic pieces that will keep you warm without weighing you down:
a puffy parka, knit convertible mittens, and a cute beanie.
The mittens fit in one pocket, and the beanie fits in the other. This makes leaving the house or settling into a coffee shop a breeze. I’m never scrambling to find the other glove or the right hat.
This puffer coat is warm, comfy, and very easy to travel with. It comes with a small travel bag, the pockets zip, and it’s long enough to keep my backside warm when sitting- but not so long that it looks awkward while walking.
I love the hood, but it doesn’t have fur around it, so if that’s a deal breaker, this may not be your best option.
Convertible Winter Gloves for Phone Use
Now, the mittens. These are not your grandma’s mittens. Using your phone in winter gloves is the worst, and this pair solves that problem. The finger cover folds back and Velcro’s into place, leaving your fingers free.
They’re thick, comfortable, and perfect for winter activities- without the annoying bulk.
Best Winter Hats to Keep Your Head and Ears Warm
Finally, the hat. An old U.S. Army study once claimed that nearly 50% of body heat is lost through your head. We now know it’s closer to 10%, but that’s still significant!
The most important thing? Make sure your hat covers your ears.
I rotate between my Carhartt beanie and knit beanies with cute little pom-poms. The pom-pom ones are my favorite- they’re adorable and warm. The Carhartt is my go-to for outdoor work like shoveling or exercising. It’s easier to wash, just not quite as cute.
Winter Boots vs Cozy Shoes: What to Wear and When
Footwear can make or break your winter comfort.
Allow me to take you back to February 14, 2022. I was reporting live from a dog park Valentine’s Day event. My shoe choice? Converse.
A very bad idea.
My feet got so cold they went numb. I had to sit in my car with the heater blasting for a solid 20 minutes before I could even drive.
Lesson learned.
Start with wool socks. Wool traps heat beautifully, and modern versions aren’t itchy. I’ve worn these for years, and they’ve stood the test of time and temperature.
For shoes, here are my two recommendations:
Sorels are perfect if you need traction, warmth, and waterproof protection. They keep my feet warm and dry in serious snow- but they are bulky, heavy, and not very travel-friendly. If you plans include lots of walking or sitting in cramped spaces (like a tour bus around Iceland) these may need to look at the next option.
If you need warmth and fashion, Uggs are unbeatable. I live in mine all winter. They’re cozy, lightweight, and go with everything. The downside? Little traction and no waterproofing- so skip them for icy sidewalks or deep snow.
Unexpected Winter Gadgets I Now Swear By
These aren’t essential essentials- but they make winter so much easier.
Three words: Electric hand warmers.
That’s right! No more shaking those little packets of gravel hoping that they will be warm enough for long enough. Electric hand warmers are rechargeable, have multiple heat settings, last all day, and come in tons of colors (pink lovers, rejoice).
The final “non-essential essential” is snow overalls—aka snowveralls. They keep everything covered so cold air and snow don’t sneak in. If you know, you know.
My Top 3 Winter Must-Haves
If I could only choose three items from this list, they would be the puffer coat, the gloves, and the Uggs. Together, they keep me warm, comfortable, cozy, and cute- without the bulk.
My bonus pick? The electric hand warmers. Rechargeable, adjustable heat, and endlessly useful.
