“My Perfect ‘Me’ Day: Adventures in Self-Care and Relaxation”

Sometimes we just need to throw the agenda out the window and have some unplanned fun! And that’s exactly what I did on my ME day!

It’s been a while.

It’s been a while since I let myself have a Makayla Day!

A day where I do my favorite things, without judgment or restriction. If I want to go to a new coffee shop, buy an impractical doodad, or check out a new part of town, I just do it! No real plan, just an outline of a few things that might be of interest. These days break up the monotony and allow for safe spontaneity. A ‘Makayla Day’ was just what the doctor ordered… Here’s how it went.

How It Started

After sleeping in, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast of eggs and potatoes! A meal that reminds me of home. Coffee was brewed just the way I like it—black. A quick clean-up of the house, and it was time to get ready. I braided my hair, threw on a comfy hoodie, and a bit of mascara, and was out the door. The only real thing I needed to do was cash two checks; besides that, the day was subject to wherever the wind blew.

My first stop was one of my secret thrift stores. It’s called The Thrifty Mouse, and it’s in Falls Church, Virginia. It’s only open for a few hours twice a week, so I’m rarely able to get there. They usually have some pretty great finds, as long as you’re willing to look for them! A leather backpack that will be perfect for my Italy trip and an antique spice rack came home with me.

They both need a bit of TLC, which I think is part of the fun! I know I want to paint the spice rack, so over to the hardware store I went. Last night I watched The Equalizer, so obviously my head is on a swivel. There’s something about the hardware store that just makes me happy. Maybe it’s the idea that any project or craft I might want to do can all be started right here. I picked up some sandpaper and a bit of white paint, hopefully, the perfect ingredients to bring the spice rack back to life.

How It’s Going- Safe Spontaneity

The next stop was the bank, so exciting, but very overdue. I cashed a few checks, and on my way out, I saw a flashing OPEN sign just a few doors down. The oh-so-recognizable red and blue neon lights beckoned me forward. A spot I’ve driven by dozens of times but never checked out, but today was the day! Tiffany’s Bakery was packed, so I had a feeling the pastries had to be good. The glass cases were full of flaky, gooey, delicious-looking treats. I picked out four goodies, each to be enjoyed for tomorrow’s breakfast.

On my way out, I noticed a bookstore just across the way. It’s kind of crazy how we can go to an area so many times but never really see it. I’ve been meaning to pick up the next book in a series I’ve been reading, and now seemed as good a time as any so in I went. Some brief browsing brought me to ‘Hook, Line, and Sinker’, a book by Tessa Bailey. I finished the first one, ‘It Happened One Summer’, a few months ago and have been jonesing for the next one. A cool $16 later and my new book in hand, the only logical next step would be to enjoy a large cup of coffee at home.

How It Ended

The soundtrack for my drive back home was none other than Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department. My apologies for any car that drove past me screaming along to ‘Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?’ my unofficial favorite song.

My Makayla day melted away into the first few chapters of my new book and my donut house blend brew. Yes… I am well aware that I should not be drinking coffee this late. But hey, it’s a ‘ME’ day, so I make the rules.

Until next time, shine bright and protect your light!
