HI THEREI’M MAKAYLA LUCERO

HERE’S A LITTLE MORE DETAIL ABOUT WHO I AM AND MY TV JOURNEY

I am from Denver, Colorado originally, and that’s where my whole family still lives! I absolutely love Colorado and it will always be my home. I went to the University of Northern Colorado to get my degree in meteorology and from there, the adventure began!

I started my career in East Texas at KLTV-7. There couldn’t have been a better place to get my feet wet in the world of broadcast meteorology. Well.. it was more like diving in headfirst into the deep end really. My first year was one of the most active severe weather seasons that East Texas had seen in decades. I had to become very comfortable with solo and team coverage of all different kinds of weather events. Tornados, hurricanes, severe storms, extreme heat, extreme cold… you name it, I covered it. I stayed in Texas for two years before the next opportunity came knocking!

In January of 2021, I became the newest team member of First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida! My time in the Sunshine State was a one-year crash course on all things tropical! Hurricanes, King Tides, rip tides, sea fog, beach erosion. It was amazing to see firsthand how the oceans impact our everyday life. Oh and living just a few minutes away from the beach wasn’t too bad either. Though my time in Florida was short, it was jam-packed with valuable experience that helped me become a better scientist and communicator.

I’ll never forget the day I got the call that my dream of being in being in a top 10 TV market was coming true! In December of 2021, I signed my next contract with WUSA-9 in Washington D.C. I was BEYOND excited to have the opportunity to share my love of weather and science with viewers in our Nation’s Capital! The last three years have challenged me more than I knew possible and I have grown immensely in such a short period of time. I’ve had to learn new skills on the fly, try things I’ve never done, and push myself out of my comfort zone. These challenges have helped mold me into the person I am today, and I am excited to continue that refining process!

So that takes us to where I am today! I am still in D.C. with WUSA-9. Each day I have an opportunity to embark on a new adventure. Will I be covering the iconic Cherry Blossoms? Or chasing severe weather? Or maybe I’ll be reporting on the newest eco-friendly craze? Regardless of the assignment, things are always interesting and I hope you’ll continue to join me on the journey!
